Stubbs races to victory in Rochestown Stakes – Horseracing News
Stubbs proved to be too good for his opponents in the Alfred Nobel Rochestown Stakes (Listed) at Naas in Ireland on Monday, June 3, 2013.
He was rated as the outright favourite to succeed with a starting price of 8 to 13, which clearly indicated that the other stallions will not find it easy to challenge him for a victory in the £31,707 event.
A total of four runners took part in the six furlong event and the start was extremely crucial, considering the overall distance to cover. However, Stubbs was unable to display speed in the opening phases of the race, which put
him down in fourth place. There was immense pressure on him but he did well eventually, taking the top spot by a clear distance of almost two lengths.
Once the race was over, the winning jockey Joseph O'Brien said, “It was a mess off a race - they hacked along early on and he did well to come from last to first. You'd have to [run him at Royal Ascot]. He's in the picture anyway.”
On the other hand, Sacha Park finished as a runner up despite being in a very good position to win the race at one point. He took the lead in the early stages and it appeared that no one would be able to pressurise him entering
the final furlong. However, the winning stallion was too good in the end.
Another race at Naas, Coolmore Stud E.B.F. Fillies' Sprint Stakes (Listed), saw no surprises, as it was won by the favourite Sandiva, who is unbeaten in the opening two races of her career.
Nick Bradley, spokesman for the winning owners, stated, “She won very easily at Nottingham and that looked even easier. She's a very good pedigree. We've turned down a lot of offers and I'm glad we did. It'll probably be the Albany
Stakes next for her but we'll talk about it.”
Sandiva did not begin aggressively, but started making up places as the race progressed. Once she was in the lead, it was pretty much clear that no one would be able to catch her. The margin of her victory was two lengths in the
end.
