Studded tires VS., Snow tires?

I drive '06 honda civic. I have 4 snow tires that I've not installed yet but put those in garage. There are not many snowing days here Portland, OR, but I had a tough time to chain up on regular tires last week when I went to ski place. Can you advice me if snow tires w/o chain works well on snow or icey road? Or do I need to get studded tires when I go to ski place? Thank you for giving me tips in advance.

Studed are the best esp. on ice. But they will sing a song to ya if theres no snow or ice.Id go with the regular snow tires since you wont be in snowy or icey weather all the time.
