I am 25 male and live at home with my wife and 5 year old son. I work full time and earn a salary of £16k per year. My wife is unemployed. I am starting college in August to do a part time day release HNC in Social Care. My friend told me i may be elegible for a bursary/grant/travel expenses etc from SAAS. Is this correct. I did a quick check with their online calculator which states i could get around £4000. Is this right? It wouldbe really good if i could get a large lump sum but it seems a little too good to be true. Supposedly there is diffeent ways of obtaining more money and i should speak to someone who knows the system. After all the money will be repaid and it will help me out in the meantime. I registered with SAAS and i was told i would receive something in the post to say i have registered with them. Im going for college interview tomorrow. How early can i apply for the funding. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Ask the student service people at college. They will advise you on all types of funding you can get

  2. Do you work for the Government?  It's just that I have been very interested in becoming a Probation Officer.  However, although I'm all set to sign up for an Open Uni course this year, it has come to my attention that to do any job in the Social Sector, you need to do the degree in Social Care, which must be sponsored by your employer, and this needs to be a local authority.  I would research into the possibility of getting sponsored.  Let me know how you get on as would be interested.

As for the exact amounts given by SAAS, I'm not sure, but just give them a call.  You'll definitely get some financial assistance, although how much exactly is debatable, for the moment.
