Question:

Student House - Choosing a room! Advise please?

I have a little dilema to share with you.

I have the choice between a:

1) A very large bedroom (with a couple of sofas) rather spacious OR

2) A medium sized bedroom (reasonable size but only half the size of the large room).

I'm a student moving into a house next year. I can have either of these rooms. Problem is our house doesnt have a lounge. The only sofas will be in the large room. I feel people may want to treat the large bedroom as a bit of a lounge. As much as I would like the large room, people may want to use it whilst im out, and I won't have much personal space. The benefit of this of course is that I can have loads of people stay with me if I want to & theres plenty of space for a bit of a party.

I cant decide whether 2 have the large room, or 2 give it to my friend. I really wana be able to have a party, just not sure if people are gonna want 2 be in and out of there all the time. I'm gonna be really peeved if i give him the large room, then he just puts a lock on the door and treats it as his own.

Any advice on which one to choose? Also I will probably be staying in the house during christmas/easter where my house mates will be going home. If I have a large room, I can invite my friends over whilst everyones away!

Any recommendations?

  1. If you do prefer your privacy, take the middle sized room. However, student accomodtion cannot normally be let without a key on ecah room, it's basic tennancy rights. Don't expect your friend to not treat the room as his own, after all that's what he's paying  for!!!!

I had the second largest room at my accomoation and we used to throw parties there, as the largest room had an en-suite, and was a bit difficult. It isn't a problem as long as you get nice people to live with!

So take the large room and put a lock on it, or take the middle room and expect your friend to put a lock on it. You pay for your space!

  2. I'd take the medium room. You can still have people over, no-one will mind a small space. If you and your friend have the same friends, then yes, party in his/her bigger room, then go back to your own, slightly smaller but much tidier room to sleep. On a more boring note, a smaller room will be easier to keep warm in the winter. Especially important if your uni is north of London.

  3. i say take the big room.

it'll be YOUR room, not a communal area, so no one will be going in and out of it.

besides, with the bigger room you can socialise more - have parties, watch movies.

Okay, yeah, Uni is for studying, but it's also for socialising. Uni is an excuse to party a lot. if you don't take that opportunity when you have the chance, you may regret it later.

  4. I would take the medium sized room because I am the type of person who would want to have my personal space.  I wouldn't like people walking in and out much of the time if it's like a huge living room.  Besides you'd still having a living room with the medium.  Besides college is to have an education.   I don't really see the need for all of that unnecessary space.
