Question:

Student looking for studio or 1br apartment in Sydney, near USyd?

I am a student planning on going on exchange to the University of Sydney next spring. I know it is too early to know for sure of anything available, but does anyone have any tips? My boyfriend and I are both going to be there, so a studio or one Bedroom apartment would be best, preferably near the university. As I will be paying for most of my trip myself, something less that $300 AUD/pw would be preferable. Anyone have any hints, tips, or know of anything this far in advance that will open up? I appreciate any help I can get!!

  1. Hi,

It is far in advance to get a property in Sydney as the rental market is very tight. You pretty much need to show up at a property and apply on the day!

However, as a University of Sydney student you'll have some options outside of a regular apartment rental. The International House on City Road has mostly dorm style accomodation, but also offer 1-bed apartments, based on availability, so your best bet is to apply early.

There is also a USyd student housing service, but you won't be able to log in to those listings until you get your student e-mail ID set up.

Another option is Unilodge, on the corner of Bay St and City Road-- a lot of exchange students live there and apartments are fully furnished. It's not fancy but the location is good and I believe it is only open to current students so you'll have a good shot at getting a spot.

I'd say your best bet, from my experience, is to find a temporary place to stay (a few weeks) when you arrive, and look for a spot then. It makes a big difference to see the place before you sign on the dotted line, and being in a uni area there are a lot of things contstantly opening/being filled. I say get here a few weeks early, as the last week before uni starts everyone is looking for housing and things fill fast!

    Good luck!
