Student portfolio: 50% REIT, 50% diversified stock - a good allocation?

A 21 year old student invests his USD 15 000 savings as follows:

50% VASGX

50% VGSIX

Is that a smart move?

  1. REITs have a lot of upside in this market. 20% is a good allocation.


  2. I have certainly seen less smart portfolios.  If it were I,  I would cut the REIT to 20%, also reduce the VASGX somewhat and invest the savings in VHGEX giving a balance of 20-40-40

  3. Why are you investing in Real Estate in this economy?

If you are happy with the " diversified stock" fund...good enough...but as far as 50% in REITS, I'd say you're overboard...could be a bonanza down the road, but why wait?... go 30 in the REITS and get 10 and 10 in " energy" and " international". ( Something that's working  NOW...and that 20% can be moved around if you see something better... maybe in ETFs rather than mutual funds...just for ease of trading)

    ...sort of making an attempt to keep the portfolio profitable...or at least close to " even"... whilst you wait for this market to turn around.
