I had student cover when I lived with other students, now I'm moving in to my own "home" do I need something extra?

Student possessions insurance is, on average, slightly/a lot cheaper.

  1. If you are a student, then you need to list 'student' as an occupation which some home insurance providers will decline to quote on. However, If you OWN the flat, home insurance would be best.

Being that student insurance is cheaper, and some cover thefts where people just walk in when the door is unlocked - I'd go for that.

Endsleigh are probably good to talk to as they do home and student possessions insurance so could probably solve this for you.

  2.   In a flat there will be many things that will probably not be covered by possessions insurance. Furniture, fittings, central heating, therefore you would need contents cover. Be safe take advice from a reputable insurer, or several.

  3. Martyn H, Home insurance is actually very flexible. I'm not familiar with all the fine print of my home policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always a phone call away. Try visting your agent or a homeowners agent in your city. http://www.usinsuranceadvisor.com/Home-I... They will be able to help you.

  4. I do not know what state your in, but you probly need renters insurance.   Call your insurance agent that handles your auto insurance.  You will get discounts on the auto that will probly pay for the renters insurance.  The more you have the more you save.  Keep them both at the same company.

  5. Generally a student possessions cover is for students living away, their main home still being with Mum & Dad. It covers small stuff against theft, fire, flood, accidental damage etc.

A household contents policy is usually for people who have set up residence away from home. That is to say left home with no intention to go back in the summer, Easter, Christmas etc.

Contents cover will include costs for alternative accommodation if your flat becomes uninhabitable due to an insured peril, personal liability (if you let the bath overflow & damage a flat below etc) , better cover (usually new for old) and a host of extras.

It is up to you but I would take the contents cover as it will cover EVERYTHING belonging to you in the flat as opposed to specific things specified under a students policy.

    Hopefully you wont need it.
