Question:

Student teacher confidentiality?

I was wondering about the student teacher confidentiality law, today in class I was called down to guidance because I've missed a lot of school lately (due to a pretty serious illness, and I have given the school doctors notes) anyways, I was called down and my teacher said I was wanted at the office, so I asked it if was for the rest of the period, and she said yes. then I said oh okay, so I bring my stuff, then this a*****e teacher says, yeah, your credit is at risk because you've missed so much school, you will fail if you do not finish these assignments in front of the entire class, and that is not exaggeration. I was wondering if this was against the law, to talk about a students academic status in front of other classmates? it totally embarrassed me... the teachers were contacted about my absences, and my parents called in numerous times about my homework, and this a*****e teacher never gave anything. I don't intend to really do anything about this, but I'm upset.

thanks!

  1. It isn't terribly appropriate, but it is certainly not against the law.

  2. Difficult. He's not revealing your actual results to anyone, which is the real nono, all he's really doing is embarrassing you, which, whilst crude, cruel and completely without tact and consideration, isn't strictly illegal as he didn't give up any exact details. Although this could come down to semantics. He was pretty direct by saying that if you didn't do the work, you would fail, which could well be seen as being just as bad as if he'd given out your test results publicly, but then again, that is common knowledge really, don't finish the work, don't pass the course, so he wasn't really saying anything that people didn't aleready know, only telling them that you were in that position.

If not illegal, it does sound like something he can and should be brought up on by the principle. If you have a form tutor (a teacher who takes morning and afternoon registration) or a head of year (a sort of deputy head teacher solely for your year in school/college) speak to them about oyur concerns and feelings. If that is not possible, find a deputy principle, head of department, school/college councilor or even arrange a meeting with the principle. Whilst nothing can be done to help your current academic situation, you can at least make your feelings heard.

My course of action would be to speak to my registration teacher or my head of year and find out if this kind of act is illegal or against educational rules. If it is, then you can decide to speak to this teacher first. By doing so you could circumvent any further difficulties, and go back to registration tutour.head of year later if need be.

  3. As long as you have a valid medical excuse the school district SHOULD work with you and maintaining credit. Missed over 2 months of 10th grade (a lifetime ago :) ) and I had to attend saturday school for a month and of course make up my work. As for the fact that he hasn't given you the work to make up talk to the counslor or VP about it and check your student handbook about medical absenses, make-up work etc. ALL public schools are required to have policies on this stuff and it SHOULD be in your handbook.

As for his behavior... consider the source.. I had a teacher do it to me as well.... have your parents contact the school via writing and keep a copy of it.

  4. I'm a teacher in the United States. You should know that, while what that awful teacher did may not be illegal, you might still have recourse. I don't know what country you are in or if you are in the United States, but some U.S. districts have policies that such unprofessional behavior would be a breach of.

Have your parents approach the principal or headmaster of your school. It could be that the teacher violated a district policy. Many have policies requiring professionalism and respect toward students. Also, any school administrator would want to know about such behavior on the part of faculty.
