  1. They had all kinds of bags, leather, etc. Some tied their books up with string.

I believe the answer above has confused 'n**i students' with 'Hitler Youth'

Whilst all students were required to be members of Hitler Youth organisations, and they did indeed go on camps and thus used rucksacks, they didn't always use these when going to school.

For instance in this picture http://spiritofprayer.com/albums/album44... the only person carrying a bag is carrying a small handbag

  2. Hmm - - - have you heard the phrase 'rucksack,' a very German Word - - - the closest American word is Knapsack - - - essentially a simple circular type bag usually made of a heavy canvas material often with a drawstring top enclosure and leather straps making it easy to either slip over just one shoulder like a woman's purse, or wear like a full on back pack.....  Some are made with a flap enclosure secured by a metal clip - - -

    """Main Entry: ruck·sack

    Pronunciation: \ˈrək-ˌsak, ˈru̇k-\

    Function: noun

Etymology: German, from German dialect, from Rucken back + Sack sack

    Date: 1879 """

  3. probably just a regular bag. And you know, the Hitler Youth was not bad, it was just like the boyscouts.
