Crystal Dynamics is the studio behind the iconic Tomb Raider series and apart from working on Lara Croft’s latest adventure they have also hinted at a new IP
The Tomb Raider series is going back to its beginnings. No, there are no plans for an HD remake of the original Tomb Raider games, though that would not be a bad idea if one was to come to think of it, but rather the game is exploring the side of the series’
protagonist, Lara Croft’s, first adventure.
The game has been shown off quite a bit recently. After making its debut at last year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3 as the common gamer prefers to call it, with a dark, gritty yet equally stunning cinematic trailer.
While a majority of the audience were wondering why Lara was wearing pants instead of her trademark shorts, others noticed that the trailer seemed to be suggesting a very different Tomb Raider experience.
This was confirmed later on via a number of interviews, trailers and demos of the game. Apparently, this will be Miss Croft’s first adventure and her ability to get what she wanted, due to her seemingly unlimited finances, would not be present in a move
that the developer hoped would make the game more realistic.
It would be fair to say that Crystal Dynamics have their hands full with what is essentially the rebirth of one of the most iconic series in the video game world, yet it seems that is not enough as the Meagan Marie, the Studio Community Manager, teased everyone
with her statement:
“Not only will our team be eating, sleeping and breathing Tomb Raider, but we’ll also be hard at work preparing to reveal exciting new intellectual property to the world.”
For those new to gaming jargon, intellectual property is abbreviated as IP which basically means an entire new game series that is not related to anything the studio has come up with before. In essence, Crystal Dynamics is working on a game that is not Tomb
Raider, i.e. more than one game.
Meagan also stated, “The New Year ushers in more than just fresh calendars and renewed resolutions. 2012 will prove a very exciting year for Crystal Dynamics, more so than any in recent memory.”
The news has led to plenty of speculation on the internet as the rumour mill has gone into full swing as to what the new title could be and what genre it would belong to. The fact that it is a new IP rules out any HD remakes and sequels.
With that out of the way the game could very well be a first-person shooter, seeing how that is where all the money seems to be these days. Having said that no one can be certain but chances are that everything will be made public come E3 later on this year.
