Question:

Study abroad in Belize or Ecuador?

There is a program at my college where I can do a study aboard for half a year in Belize or Ecuador, but I really don't know much about either place. Has anybody lived there? Would it be safe for a young woman? I have heard of kidnappings and other violent crimes. Any personal experience that might help me?

  1. I am Belizean and its actually safer to be a foreigner in Belize than a local since crime against foreigners are taken far more seriously. As for Ecuador I've only heard good things about it from the father of a student on exchange there from York University. As for the crime there I'm really not sure. As for Belize as with any place as long as you take a few precautions you shouldn't have any problems. Through your school I'm sure you'll meet locals who will be happy to tell you when certain places should be avoided particularly at night and areas best traveled in company. And any other precautions that might be prudent to make. So is this an exchange via Galen or the University of Belize? I have contacts at either school and would be more than Happy to Pass you along to them.
