I have wanted to study abroad for a while now even though funds have been a little tight for school. Im coming close to graduating so it is now or never. However, after talking with a few friends returning from study abroad I wonder if I should just travel instead of doing a study abroad program. My friends talked about the joys of being in another country but also having to study, buy books, and do homework instead of exploring. Also students pay tuition, airfare, program fees, travel expenses, rent, food, etc. in addition to paying for the study abroad program. I keep thinking I would just use that extra 2,000 dollars and use it just on travel. But am I missing out on anything essential by skipping the educational programs (like taking a psychology class in Spain) and just backpacking through the country?
