I am applying for residency permit in germany and I need to get a (Verpflichtungserklärung) how do i get it?

What is a (Verpflichtungserklärung) ?

I am looking for admission into the UNI at Munich and after hypothetically I get there and get accepted, I am supposed to apply for a residency permit but one of the requisites as per the university's webpage which is:

http://www.en.uni-muenchen.de/intstud/ne...

is that you have to supply proof of financial support:

through either:

a)scholarship or grant

b) a bank statement with enough for one year minimum(around 7000 euros i think)

or c) Verpflichtungserklärung

Since I dont have either options a) or b).

I can only try option c).

How do I get a Verpflichtungserklärung?

  1. Doesn't translate perfectly, but I think we'd call it an "Affidavit of Support."  Most likely the uni wants to make sure you won't become a financial burden on the country. Someone has to  agree to be financially responsible for you.  Think about it- who in Germany would be willing to guarantee to the government that you won't become a financial burden, a welfare case?

Germany is nothing if not diligent and tuchtig. You have two main issues- getting admitted to a university and getting the sovereign nation of Germany to let you reside there for a period of time.

Both entities don't want you to arrive penniless. You'd not succeed at studying and you'd become a welfare burden. So they're *both* wanting you to show some financial solvency before you live and study in Germany.  Good luck and Hochachtungsvoll!

  2. A "Verpflichtungserklärung" is a Letter of Sponsorship.

According to § 68 of the German Immigration Law or "Aufenthaltsgesetz", this letter must be submitted by your sponsor in Germany or by the person who is going to take care for all you expences while you stay here (For the second case you have to ask the German Embassy, in order to know if citizens from your country can apply as sponsors).

This  means she or he will pay ALL potential costs that may occur during your stay in Germany. As for example Hospital in case you get sick or the damage if you have an accident etc.

You have to consider that as soon as this document is issued and signed by the sponsor there is no way back, it will be valid for alll the time you spend in Germany and neither he/she or you can void it . The person who signs this document should know that he/she is taking a big responsability and that with this document he/she is allowing the german law to ask for money in return no matter if she/he lives in Germany or in any other country.

In order to obtain the letter of sponsorship  (“Verpflichtungserklärung”) according to §68 of the

German Immigration Law (“Aufenthaltsgesetz”) the sponsor in Germany must apply for this standardized document at the competent aliens authority (“Ausländerbehörde” or

“Ausländeramt”), which is usually situated at the sponsor’s local city adminstration in Germany or if the international agreements between your country and Germany allows it, you r sponsor can apply for the standarized document at the German embassy.
