Matthew 4:10.... Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only NIV

Then Jesus said to him: “Go away, Satan! For it is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’”NWT

(I have quoted the NWT as i like the wording.)

Matching scriptures Re Worship are Du 5:9 & Re 22:9....But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and of all who keep the words of this book. Worship God!"

Du 6:13...Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.

Re Serve De 10:20, Jos 24:14 & Luke 4:8

Luke 4:8...Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.

In this scripture Jesus is putting Satan in his place.

The materal i am researching makes a point that here Jesus calls Satan by his name , is this an important point ?

Note Jesus say's"'Worship the Lord your God" , so does this mean Satan has a God ,even if he does not worship & does this apply to non belivers today ?

Jesus is directing worship to his Father not to his self , is this a sign that Jesus is not God ?

In the NIV it puts service like this "and serve him only" but in the NWT it words it this way "render sacred service" is there a difference ?

Have i missed any important points ?

Can you add relevant scriptures or Comments ?

  1. In today's parlance we would say, "Ego, get out o' here."

When we realize that it is our own minds that are betraying us, then we can replace them with the Christ mind which is our true heritage.

  2. Do you know Jesus?

  3. "Ah, no!"

"This is Jesus CHRIST telling Satan whom

    HE IS TO WORSHIP."

"Until 'the Last Day', Satan will only worship itself."

"Jesus CHRIST will never worship himself."

"Neither, will Jesus CHRIST ever worship Satan."

  4. Yes. Satan has a God. God is God over all creation. Satan knows this. But what Satan is is against God. He does not have peace with God. From what I gather in the scriptures, Satan is trying to defeat God still. But God foresaw the end and told us about it. The reason why Satan seems to be on one track even after we have been told what he would do is because he wants to prove God out to be a liar like Satan is.

Look in Job and you will see a bit into their relationship. Satan is trying to contest God. And God again holds true to His word. Satan tries to deny what God said would happen the whole time.

  5. This scripture is often cited as refutation of the "Trinity Doctrine" practiced by modern christians.  It is one of several times that Jesus refers to God as a separate entity.  It is used in refutation of the Gospels by some(gnostics, early christians) as they give Jesus credit for the act of creation and power over all of it, which is not evidenced in this passage.  It is a rather controversial passage for mainstream churches to talk about.  What organization is you research for?

  6. Jesus and Satan were alone at the time of this interaction. And yet, Matthew records their conversation, word for word, some 45 - 60 years after it "happened".

Methinks it might not have happened at all. By all means study it's insights into the human condition, if any, but don't treat it as history, because history it ain't.

  7. There are other Greek words that the King James Version renders “worship,” but not a single one of these Greek verbs is directed to Jesus to show that such action was commanded to be performed or was performed toward him. Surely when Luke 14:10 (KJ) says, “Then shalt thou have worship [do′xa] in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee,” Jesus did not mean that a human guest who was given a higher place at a Jewish meal would be worshiped, but it meant he would merely “have honor,” as the New World Translation renders the word (do′xa). Thus we see that the Christian Greek Scriptures make a distinction between Jehovah God and his Son Jesus Christ, by reserving some words rendered “worship” for God, to the exclusion of Jesus.

When Satan the Devil tempted Jesus to try to have him worship the adversary, Jesus did not say to the Tempter, ‘Worship me,’ but said, “It is Jehovah your God you must worship [proskyne′ō], and it is to him alone you must render sacred service [latreu′ō].” (Matt. 4:10, NW; Luke 4:8) Jesus, speaking and including himself, said to the Samaritan woman: “You worship [proskyne′ō] what you do not know; we worship [proskyne′ō] what we know, because salvation originates with the Jews. . . . the genuine worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth. . . . God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with spirit and truth.” (John 4:22-24, NW) Jesus, even after his glorification in heaven, did not change from directing worship to God his Father rather than to himself. In the Revelation, which God gave Jesus, the pure worship is shown as due to be given to the Most High God, Jehovah. (See Revelation 4:10; 5:14; 7:11; 11:16; 14:7; 15:4; 19:4, 10.) And when John fell down at the feet of the angel whom Jesus sent to deliver the revelation, the angel said to John: “Worship God.” (Rev. 19:10; 22:9) Thus the worship was to be rendered to Jehovah God, although blessing, glory and praise were to be ascribed to the glorified Jesus, the Lamb, as well as to God his Father.

At Hebrews 1:6 we read: “But when he again brings his Firstborn into the inhabited earth, he says: ‘And let all God’s angels worship him.’” (NW) As the Greek verb here is proskyne′ō, it could also have been rendered “do obeisance to,” as in all the preceding cases having to do with Jesus when on earth as a man. This same word in Greek is used in addressing those who will become members of Christ’s glorified congregation or “bride,” in these words at Revelation 3:9 (NW): “Look! I will give those from the synagogue of Satan who say they are Jews, and yet they are not but are lying—look! I will make them come and do obeisance [proskyne′ō] before your feet and make them know I have loved you.” They will not be worshiped.

Worship is not asked to be given to the anointed King whom Jehovah God sets upon his holy hill of Zion, namely, his Son Jesus Christ, but due submission and respect are asked of the kings and judges of the earth, in these words: “Serve Jehovah with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish in the way, for his wrath will soon be kindled.” (Ps. 2:11, 12, AS) This agrees with the recognition that the apostle Paul says must yet be given to the glorified Jesus by all living creation, at Philippians 2:9-11 (NW): “God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every other name, so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground, and every tongue should openly confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.” The knee is bent in the name of Jesus as Lord and in worship to the Father as God, and the tongue confesses openly that Jesus Christ is Lord, but this is done to the glory of God the Father, all this showing the superiority of the Father. Thus, “all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.”—John 5:22, 23, NW.

Consequently, since the Scriptures teach that Jesus Christ is not a trinitarian co-person with God the Father, but is a distinct person, the Son of God, the answer to the above question must be that no distinct worship is to be rendered to Jesus Christ now glorified in heaven. Our worship is to go to Jehovah God. However, we show the proper regard for God’s only-begotten Son by rendering our worship to God through and in the name of Jesus Christ. Even now when we kneel in prayer, as Paul did according to Ephesians 3:14-19, we offer prayer in the name of Jesus Christ in obedience to his own directions (John 15:16; 16:23-26), but the prayer itself is addressed, not to Jesus, but to God his Father. In this way we keep things in their relative positions.

  8. My comments. There are there are three parties: Jesus, Satan and Jehovah. Imagine a courtroom with you in the dock and these roles being filled by Jesus your Advocate, Satan your Prosecutor and Jehovah your Judge. The Prosecution has a strong case however your Advocate is making the point that the Judge is the person who makes the decision and this is backed up by Scripture. Satan is in his place serving Jehovah as in Genesis as in Job (I agree). Matthew is a Jew and his gospel is best read through Jewish eyes.

Satan here represents the Law and is not evil as such. The Law has the power to condemn not to save. This is found in Romans. In my eyes legalistic Christians who go around condemning people to h**l are being Satanic. Perhaps there is a God given role for them however they are still bound by the same Law.

Luke has a different view of the devil and this is where other Christians use their eyes to see the traditional Christian view of the devil. This is supported by passages in Isaiah and Ezekiel. This view is not wrong; it does not apply to the interpretation of Matthew on this point or at this point in time.

I reconcile all this with the doctrine of the Trinity by saying that God is taking on the roles of Judge and Advocate. Perhaps for purists it is as wrong to mix analogies as it it wrong to mix metaphors. Anyway that is my point of view.

  9. Jesus is nothing more than a character in a fairy tale.

You do realize, don’t you, that the christian cult guide book is nothing more than fairy tales and boogeyman stories written by men in order to keep the uneducated masses amused, in line, and obeying commands to further the authors’ own socio-economic agenda?

I respect that you respect my opinion.  I just hate to see so many individuals taken in and manipulated by these mind control cults.

  10.   In  Matt,  Jesus  is  telling  Satan  to  get behind him and stop  trying to tempt him with  worldly  thing,s,,that  we are suppose to worship  God  only,

In Revelation,s    when  an  angel  showed  John  the Heaven,s

and the  host  of  angel,s to God,,John  knelted  down  as to

worship  the angel,,and the angel  told John  ,do  it not

because  I  am no more than thee,,a fellow  servant.

all  of itr is saying,,worship  God  only.

  11. Worship the Lord your God is a quote from scripture and the commandments, which is directed at man, not Satan.  He's refuting Satan's temptation with truth.

Jesus worships the Father also.  God expressed perfectly in man is Jesus.

Different translations can mean different things.  You should focus on the principles and lessons here and not confuse yourself with the devil in the details.

  12. Back up to verse 7 in Matthew 4

7Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Jesus is the one being tempted and His response confirms He is God manifested in the flesh.  I believe it is important that Jesus called Satan by name because as spirit filled believers we should be able to identify the enemy when we come up against him.

Don't forget there is only one true God and God created Satan only He created him as an angel but satan puffed himself up and wanted to be God, thus satan was cast down.  (Satan’s fall from heaven is described in Isaiah 14:12-14 and Ezekiel 28:12-18. While these two passages are referring specifically to the king of Babylon and the king of Tyre, they also reference the spiritual power that was behind those kings - Satan)

I'm not sure what your confused about with the worship and serve scriptures.

    Matthew 4:7 additional comments...

back up to Matthew 4:4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

study this out and then study out John 12:47-49

47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

and now study John 1:1 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

    and

    1 John 5:7

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Every WORD Jesus spoke was directly from the mouth of God...do you see the correlation?

  13. Satan and God know each other so Satan would have to know Jesus by name and like wise with the rest I suppose.

Another is that the composer of the writings would have to distinguish between the persons concern and not the reader for if I say to you that I offer you something that means I am referring to the reader and not the character of the story.

    Does that make sence.

  14. Satan doesn't worship Jehovah God. Satan wants the worship to be directed to himself. That's why he was asking Jesus to do a form of worship to himself, i.e. Satan.  Jesus was basically referring to the Scriptures, that is why he said "IT IS WRITTEN'  - the word YOU , is actually Jesus's defence at that instance, to prove that any human, shd worship God instead of Satan. unfortunately, the commandment is not being followed by many

  15. Satn Does have a God.. Satan was

in heaven as the most beautiful angel

he sat at the left hand side of God.. but he soon tried to take over so God Casted him out of heaven..

but because Jesus Said the Lord Your God doesnt mean he isnt of God.. He was a msger for God to teach people the beliefs of the Christian faith, ya hi know it could be confussing sometimes but the Bible says that Jesus was the Spitting image of God and that God Sent him from heaven.. BUT if you look the bible also says Iforget what verse.. But it Says "and satan took Jesus to a mountain top and said, if thou art the son of god cast yourself down for it is written that the angel will protect you and you will not slash your foot on stone and the LORD said unto him it is ALSO written that thou shalt not tempt the lord thy God"and i think that scripture goes on to say like "lest ye be cast intothe lake of fire"
