Matthew 5:1&2......1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them saying:

Cross references for verse 1....Mark 1:13, Like 6:17&20, 9:18 John 6:3&15

Found this comment on verse 1....

A..... None will find happiness in this world or the next, who do not seek it from Christ by the rule of his word. He taught them what was the evil they should abhor, and what the good they should seek and abound in.

Cross reference scriptures for verse 2...Matt 13:34&35, Acts 8:35, 10:34, 18:14

Matthew 13:34&35....34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:

"I will open my mouth in parables,

I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world

Compare Ps:78:2....I will open my mouth in parables,

I will utter hidden things, things from of old-

Comments on verse 2

B....Opened his mouth, and taught. This wonderful discourse of three chapters is to the New Dispensation what the law given from Sinai was to the Old. That was the moral law of Judaism, this is the moral law of Christianity; that was given from the Mount that could not be touched, this from the Mount of blessing. Compare Lu 6:20-49.

C....None will find happiness in this world or the next, who do not seek it from Christ by the rule of his word. He taught them what was the evil they should abhor, and what the good they should seek and abound in.

Matthew 5:1&2 These are matter of fact scriptures & i did not thing i would find much to study about them.

Are the comments right or wrong , why ?

Can you add any relevent scriptures or comments ?

  1. 'B' above is wrong.  Salvation is available as a contract from the Savior YAHOSHUA.  It is like a marriage contract.  Take His name, follow His rules, you become His 'bride'.  And He saves you.  The Jews thought they could be saved without the groom by following the contract.  The 'Christians' think they will be saved by the Groom though they reject and violate the contract.  The Savior's name YAHOSHUA means 'YHVH-saved'.  There is only one road to salvation, and it was the Savior YAHOSHUA who gave the Hebrews the 'Law'.

  2. This is the beginning of the famous sermon on the mount, much of which is great and based on ancient Greek ideas.

It gets a bit worrying, though, when Jesus tells his followers to cut off their own hands and feet, and pluck out their own eyes, to avoid the sin of adultery (verses 27-30).

  4. Very good point, too much to add. Read the book "Sermon on the mount" by Emmit Fox.

  5. ''Whether Jesus ever actually existed has long been debated. The argument (very well documented) is that there is absolutely no corroborating evidence of his existence in documents other than highly suspect Christian sources." - Riane Eisler, "The Chalice & the Blade," p. 122
