Matthew 5:13......"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

See Mark 9:50...."Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other."

Luke 14:35....It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.

"He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

1.The ministers of the word especially (unless they will be the most cowardly of all) must lead others both by word and deed to this greatest joy and happiness.

Your doctrine must be very sound and good, for if it is not so, it will be not regarded and cast away as a thing unsavoury and vain.

What will you have to salt with? And so are fools in the Latin tongue called saltless, as you would say, men that have no salt or savour and taste in them.

2. Ye are the salt of the earth. Salt preserves from corruption. The disciples of Christ preserve the world from general corruption. Whatever becomes utterly corrupted is doomed to be destroyed.

But if the salt have lost its savour. Salt is worthless if it has lost its qualities. It preserves no longer. It is fit only to be cast out and trodden under foot. So, too, if those who are the salt of the earth cease to communicate saving power, they are fit only to be cast out, and Christ will cast such out of his mouth. See Re 3:16.

Do you agree with the comments above , why ,why not ?

Have i missed any important points ?

Can you add relevant any scriptures or comments ?

  1. we should set good examples...

  2. salt gives flavor, heals wounds, & melts coldness.  But from the scriptures, Christ says Himself in simplicity what salt is: Salt is GOOD; that is what salt is, good!

  3. I would add particulars to whom the Sermon on the Mount was given.  It was given to the house of Israel, particularly Judah.  This was the covenant people.  The people who throughout generations had the truth and were to be a light unto the world.

However, as the fell into apostasy, the covenants and ordinances which they held so dear became bitter and useless.  The "salt" or preservative nature of the people became lost.

This part of the sermon is given to all the diciples not just the 12.  It's teachings have relevance to all those who enter into sacred covenants with God.

Salt of the Earth.—Dummelow's Commentary, on Matt. 5:13, states: "Salt in Palestine, being gathered in an impure state, often undergoes chemical changes by which its flavor is destroyed while its appearance remains." Perhaps a reasonable interpretation of the expression, "if the salt have lost his savor," may be suggested by the fact that salt mixed with insoluble impurities may be dissolved out by moisture, leaving the insoluble residue but slightly salty. The lesson of the Lord's illustration is that spoiled salt is of no use as a preservative. The corresponding passage in the sermon delivered by Jesus to the Nephites after His resurrection reads: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose its savor, wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men." (3 Nephi 12:13.)

  4. I agree.

Salt is found everywhere on the face of the earth.

Salt in the correct amount will assist in causing a great growth rate, in farming. Some salt is necessary for growth.

Salt in to large an amount will sterilize the soil.

The spiritual balance produced by the "salt' of  Gods presence in ones life is of critical importance.

Many reject the salt altogether, some will add salt of their accord and according to their own judgment.

Others will be still and know that He is God.

God knows exactly how much salt we need, and when it is needed.

  5. AND YOU DON'T THINK THE BIBLE IS PSYCHO BABBLE ?

  6. Salt only preserves from corruption if it is thoroughly mixed.  This would seem to be a text that discourages being a hermit or a monk.

  7. Does salt ever loose it's saltiness?  It can be diluted, but does it stop being salty? Salt increases the flavor of our natural food, as does the Holy Spirit bring our Spiritual food to full flavor.  Yes, salt also preserves.

  9. Jesus implied that his followers’ preaching to others about God’s Kingdom would have a potentially preserving, or lifesaving, influence on their hearers. Indeed, those who applied Jesus’ words would be protected from the moral and spiritual decay in the world....
