Comment

Happy are the meek - They that hold all their passions and affections evenly balanced. They shall inherit the earth - They shall have all things really necessary for life and godliness. They shall enjoy whatever portion God hath given them here, and shall hereafter possess the new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

"for they will inherit the earth " will the meek go to heaven or earth ?

Many Christians say they will go to heaven but is that what Jesus is saying ? ( please think hard before answering, as this has me wondering )

What does the Weymouth NT bible mean when it says ..."as heirs shall obtain possession of the earth". , does it mean only our Chrildren have hope ?

Who or what are the meek ?

Is the quoted comment correct , why or why not ?

Can you add any relevant Scripture or comment ?

Is there any real difference in the different translations quoted ?

  1. Matthew chapter 5 is interesting in the way Jesus speaks about those who will inherit the earth, and those who will see God in heaven. There is no problem understanding that both will turn out to be true when we consider that the Bible says Christians look for God creating a new heavens and a new earth wherein righteousness will dwell (2 Peter 3:13). This follows the heavens passing away with a great noise and the earth and its works being burned up.

This is confirmed in Revelation 21: "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away," then the New Jerusalem, the City of God, comes down from heaven to earth and God resides with man. Jesus told John, "He that overcometh shall inherit all things..." so that would include heaven and earth. Prior to this wonderful event, God's people who die find themselves 'absent from the body but present with the Lord', as Paul put it.

Christians are told their inheritance is kept for them in heaven. One has to be an heir to have any inheritance, of course, and God has adopted into his family those who are his children; heirs of the promise with all the resources of heaven at their disposal even now. There is actually a sense in which meek Christians already inherit the earth inasmuch as they enter into a joy of living spiritually which makes sky above a brighter blue, grass below more verdant green (as the old hymn puts it) because they experience everything as the children of God. They do not grasp on to material things or try to extract from the earth all they can get; they simply enjoy God's creation even whilst it suffers from our sin. But there is far better to come!

  2. So many translations, so many qoutations, so many comments. When it comes to translation, go for Formal Equivalence (literal); Dynamic Equivalence (free) and Paraphrases are good commentaries.

The meek are those who are obedient to the word of God; they shall have access to both heaven and earth; they are "heirs" of God but not necessarily yet their children.

  4. While there will doubtless be ones among the meek that will go to heaven, what most can hope for is to live on Earth.

Remember that when God first created mankind, he created them not with the idea of them going to heaven (he already had creatures in heaven) but with the intention of living on Earth.  That purpose got diverted when man sinned, but God's purpose, which cannot be thwarted, is still ultimately to have the Earth a peaceful place full of sinless humans.

The fact that some people will go to heaven is only an addition to God's plan, a part of the arrangement of God's Kingdom, which will make the completion of his purpose for the Earth possible.

  5. It's all bunk.
