Question:

Study on the way that race effect the way we learn?

A couple of years ago I read about a study which concluded that people from different racial backgrounds learn in slightly different ways, and that this meant that they benefit from being taught in slightly different ways.

For example, that Afro-Caribbean childrens' grades improved if they were switched over to a more visual style of learning, but that children fro a white European background didn't see the same improvements.

Does anybody know the name of this study and whether it achieved peer review status?

link will take you to an article on how culture affects brain function. It is not about race but about culture. Check it out, its pretty cool.

  2. It's a recognized fact that students generally fall into 4 different 'learning' categories. 1] Auditory [ prefer listening to lectures, recordings, etc.]  2] Visual [ prefer to see, read, etc.]  3] Tactile [ like to underline, highlight, etc, using hands ]  4] Kinesthetic [ use of 'whole' body, acting, playing, puppetry, etc. ]. Many studies have demonstrated that Africans and Afro-Caribbeans DO , generally, prefer 'visual'. I don't know the specific study to which you are referring, sorry.

  3. You may be referring to studies done on learning styles, but I don't know if any were done on styles associated with ethnicity/race.  Here is a good place to start:

I'll look for a more in depth article with some peer review on it.

I think this may be what you are seeking.  At least it will give you some further information & opinions from both sides of the question via some referrances.

"The literature on how race, ethnicity, and culture affect the learning of students from non-European minority groups in the United States has over-whelmingly focused on school failure, rather than resilience."

Be aware that any study will have both supporters & detractors, so you will have to make up your own mind. Peer reviews always go into both the negative & positive aspects of a study.

  4. It's not the race.....It's the INTELLECT.

  5. A better "study" might be to discover why most people choose to remain ignorant regarding the question of..."race".

There is but one (1) race of humans currently on the planet and this has been the case for the last 35 to 40,000 years.

You are confusing ethnicity with race; they are different.

If your teacher uses these terms incorrectly, do not correct him or her. Do the class work, get the grade and forget anything they have told you. Select a good university and...learn.

  6. Hmmm. "Learning styles" is the phrase for being visual, compared to languagey and the others.

I'd never before heard there was any correlation between this and ethnicity. Learning styles vary among individuals -- wherever their ancestors were born.

'Race' is a discredited concept with no physical reality to it.
