Question:

Studying Abroad - Japan or Germany?

I'm in grade 10 and have been interested for some time in doing a year in another country. I live in Canada and want to go to either Japan or Germany. Is it possible for me to still apply for an exchange program, or is it too late? I've been looking at many sites and most are quite costly. Although scholarships are an option are they very competitive? Some websites like YFU don't tell me enough information such as cost etc, have you gone with YFU? How was the experience/cost? I don't know if it makes a difference but my grades are mid 80's.

  1. Applications have closed for the 2008-2009 school year. However you are beginning at JUST the right time for the next school year!

Your grades are fine for a standard program, however, if you wish to apply for scholarships, you may need to get them up just a bit.

In addition to YFU, check with AFS and Rotary. Both offer good programs to Japan and Germany.

As to which one? Your program will ask you for your top three choices. List both. I can pretty much guarantee if you list Germany, that's where you will go. Germany is one of the biggest "trading" partners in the "exchange business".

If you'd like to check out some people who've done exchanges, try this online community: http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/

It's not program specific, just advice and commentary from those who have "been there, done that".

    Good luck!

  2. well which language have you been studying?

  3. Germany. Your grades are a bit low for Japan

  4. It's definitely to late for this year. You can go next year though. I'll be going next year in 2009 with AFS.

The programs are very expensive, but well worth it. And there are scholarships available which can be competitive, but there's also financial aid.

If you want more information on YFU email them.

A few other programs I would suggest are:

  5. I think it is late.... the deadline was April 1... Maybe next year. or even for spring  of next year!!!
