  1. I doubt it.  I got into the University of Michigan after studying in Japan for a year as a junior.  My sister, who didn't study overseas and had similar background otherwise, didn't get in.

In fact, studying overseas can be an asset.  It shows something unique about you, and our world is only increasing in its "globalness."

Check out Rotary International for youth exchanges.  They're fabulous.

  2. On the contrary, colleges and universities LOVE former exchange students and many times offer preferred admissions and/or scholarships.

Your problem will be timing. It's getting quite late to apply for next year! Organizations are already placing students for the 2008-2009 school year. You will need to HURRY!

You need to pick a program. Make sure it is CSIET listed -- certified to operate in the U.S. You can find the list at www.csiet.org. You should also check with your school counselor for a recommendation as a program is only as good as its local representative. Generally, AFS, Aspect, Rotary and YFU are reliable everywhere.

    Good luck!

  3. NOT AT ALL.  Studying abroad increases your chances of getting accepted to a University.  You will stand out from the rest of the applicants.  You will look more mature and colleges know that you can handle living on your own, as you have done it before.  This girl I met was not only accepted to her first choice college, but was chosen to receive a full scholarship.
