Question:

Studying Medicine in the USA

Hi,

I'm from Europe and I'd like to study Medicine in the USA. I'm somewhat puzzled about my possibilities.

I've got BA in English Language and Literature. That is, I've got no completed courses in Biology or Chemistry. However, I'm pretty good at both and I'd be willing to sit some entrance exams.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a million,

Queenie

  1. American medical schools will accept students with any major; you do not have to major in biology or chemistry.

You do, however, have to take all the pre-med courses required by the institution you are applying to. These are typically the following, although they vary somewhat from one medical college to another:

    General Chemistry, one year

    Organic Chemistry, one year

    General Biology, one year

    General Physics, one year

Mathematics - sometimes through Calculus, sometimes through Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry

All of the science courses listed above are those designed for a pre-med student or one who is taking a major in the discipline. There is no way a student could be prepared for medical school without actually taking these courses.

You will also be required to take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).

Admission to medical school in the U.S. is quite competitive and students who are admitted have outstanding grades and test scores.
