Studying aboard in Japan and need a phone!!!!!?

Hi I'm going to be studying aboard for a year and I'm not sure what to do about a phone. Should I get an international phone or should I buy a phone in Japan and get a plan under Japan's network? Thanks!!!!

You can either buy from Japan or you can buy one unlocked phone from US and take it to Japan.
