Question:

Studying abroad during High School vs. College?

Since studying abroad is fairly expensive I'm wondering if I should put my money towards a High School exchange or a College one. I know that if I go during High School it will be through AFS but I have no idea about College.

Input from former exchange students would be best but any is good. :]

  1. Hey,

It really depends on where, when and how long you wish to study abroad. Venturing to a different country is no easy task. Passports, student visa's, accommodation, expenses etc. are what you really have to take in mind. You are correct with AFS if you wish to travel during highschool, but for college you go abroad for a semester and it depends on what programs your college will offer.

Although it's a great experience to go international, you really shouldn't do it if you feel it's an impulse. It requires alot of work and certain 'popular' countries require you to have a formal understanding of the language, as the work is instructed in the country's native tongue.

  2. Actually, there are plenty of college programs abroad that offer instruction in English although the countries where they're located speak a different language. Don't let that aspect of it scare you -- you can take English courses all over the world.

Studying abroad isn't as expensive as you think. Sometimes it's the same as or even less than a U.S. university tuition. While it does take a lot of planning and preparation for studying abroad, most colleges and universities have a Study Abroad Advisor equipped to help you with those things. And, actually, you aren't limited to a study-abroad program through your home university. You can look for study-abroad programs offered through other universities around the world and they will transfer your credit. If you're interested, you can look through college and high school programs abroad here:

There are also lots of outlets for financial aid for studying abroad ... either through grants, loans, or scholarships ... check out these pages:

The bottom line is, if you really want to study abroad, you can. You just have to find the resources, but they are out there for you.

Good luck! I hope you do it, it's extremely rewarding!
