  1. you don't have to know any italian to be able to study abroad. you can go to an italian university and study any subject, just like you would here in the states. study abroad is expensive though. one semester can range from as little as $7,000 to as much as $17,000 for a whole year. you'll probably have to take out student loans to pay for the trip. good luck!

  2. First things firsts:

How does it work? Well you start of by deciding what you what to study, followed by which college/universities you want to study at. Once you have dertermined that, it is just a case of applying to the school as an international student, the school's website will have all of the information you require in order to apply for admisson.

Once you are accepted, you may or may not need a student visa. If you ae a citizen of an EU country and studying in another EU country then a visa will not be required, if your circumstances differ from what I have mentioned i.e. you are not an EU citizen and/or you are not going to be studying in an EU country then a visa will be required.

How much does it costs? Studying abroad is expensive and unfortuntely I do not have any estimated costs for studying in Italy, maybe someone better informed about the costs of international students studying there will give you some figures to work with.

If you attend a school in a non-English speakng country such as Italy you can expect the lessons to be taught and the text books to be written in Italian so knowing the language will allow you to understand what is being taught and make the experience more worth-while. In saying that, there are English taught schools in Italy, where all of the lessons and text books are in English, these usually costs a bit more to attend but are worth looking into.

  3. I studied abroad in London during a semester of my junior year of college. I went abroad with IFSA (http://www.ifsa-butler.org), a program affiliated with my school (which made everything easier). I was able to pay tuition to my college (as normal) and my college took care of paying the study abroad fees. Additionally, all my grades transferred back to my home college with no problem.

There are also other options, for example, you could take a semester or year off and travel freely. You can also study away during the summer.

I'd say studying away is definitely something to look forward to, and when you begin to interview at colleges, always ask them about their study abroad opportunities. It'll be a great help when deciding where to go to school and to plan for the future.

As for going to Italy - it would always be helpful to know some Italian before you go. At the same time, there are study abroad programs solely for learning a language and eventually becoming fluent, so don't feel discouraged if you want to go somewhere but don't know the language yet.

    Enjoy!
