I live outside of New York City, so I am used to big city life, but want something different in Australia. I want to have a good time near the water, surf, party, cheap beer, etc.. I am not looking for techno disco nightclub life (NYC finest night life haha) nor am I looking for a top notch University or education. This is like a vacation to knock off some college credits. Also, I do not want to spend a lot of money, but coming from the suburbs of New York City, I am used to high prices.

  1. By what your telling us here, I would pick Brisbane to be the place to study in. Great beaches to go to and only an hour away from the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast. If you have no car to get to the Beaches, then we have the trains and public transport to take you there.

  2. so if you are used to the high prices you have it made!you get your vacation and education at the same time at a reasonable price. What could be better?

  3. Sydney.. better beaches

  4. Seems like you know it all being from the US they all do don't they :)  Try New Zealand they need the funds :)

  5. I suggest forgetting SYdney or Brisbane....

    COME TO MELBOURNE!!!

We have good weather in Summer and have wonderful beaches around victoria....

There are a lot of reasons why Melbourne is Better than Sydney, here's some:

    - Better and cheaper food

    - Nicer people. Sydney people can be rude!

    - Has an arts and entertainment culture (Sydney doesn't!!!)

    - We host the International Melbourne Comedy Festival, Grand Prix, Moomba and various other festivals

    - Our CBD is easier to navigate

    - We have trams and not lightrail

    - We have Australia's SECOND best university - the University of Melbourne, ranked 22 in the world! (NOW BEFORE ANYONE DISPUTES THIS, PLEASE REFER http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_... Link below.

    - People come down to Melbourne to shop

    - Own experience with people with anger management problems coming from Sydney

    - Melbourne has better drivers - Sydney drivers have anger management issues (generally, Sydney people are just angry, see above - people who SLAM audit files in rooms and books on desks in an office environment, isn't that right?)

    - Traffic is better in Melbourne

    - Melbourne has more markets for getting fresh fruit, produce and other cool stuff. There's Queen Victoria, Preston, Prahran, South Melbourne and many more!

    - Melbourne is grid layout, north east south west. Sydney is a nauseating rollercoaster.

    - Fashionable, friendly. funky, fun, vibe, bars, parks, basically how ugly is George St? How beautiful is Collins St?Adds to our AWESOME nightlife

    - We don't have ugly beach riots like Cronulla!

    - We also have the national champion football (Melbourne Victory) club... and the countries greatest high school, aptly named, Melbourne High School (also not forgetting MacRob for the girls)

    - Better architecture rather than relying on the Harbour and Opera House for everything!

    - We have the biggest shopping complex in the southern hemisphere - Chaddy!

    - Crown Casino kicks Star City's ***!

    - Cheaper booze

    - FASHION!

    - We have the Eureka Tower - tallest residential building in the world!

    - Oscar winner Cate Blanchett comes from Melbourne! (and MLC)

    - Public transport is so much d**n cheaper!

    - We have the Aus Open and Kooyong Classic, which kicks Adidas international tournament's *** :P

    - Worst coffee ever in Sydney

    - Melbourne doesn't have a stupid monorail!

    - More expensive accommodation in Sydney and property in general

    - Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival time, not to mention the Melbourne Cup!

    - MCG is a much better stadium than SCG

    - Well endowed men - note I am ONLY putting up your suggestions so feel free to argue this one with me

    - Really great bars

    - Monopoly Board which features Melbourne

    - Melbourne also has the tallest office building in australia - depending on who you believe - either 120 Collins, Rialto or 101 Collins - they are all taller than any buildings in Sydney

    - 7 out of the top 10 Aussie companies have their HQ in Melbourne....BHP, Telstra, ANZ Coles Myer, NAB, FOSTERS

    - Melbourne had the first ever cricket test match

    - Bigger agricultural show

    - The Melbourne Cup and really awesome Spring Carnival

    - Bigger Fashion Festivals (Melbourne International)

    - Melbourne hosted the first sitting of parliament, before Canberra was established

    - Melbourne also has the best fire-twirlers in Aust

melbourne is the sporting capital, all the best sporting people from around the world come to our city

    - We were the capital city of Australia before Canberra... They've never been and never will be!

    - We hosted the Olympic Games first... They can never take that away from us hahaha

WE HAVE CHEEPER BOOOZE THAN SYDNEY AND BRISBANE...ThATS THE BEST THING!!! :P

Nah I seriously suggest you check out melbourne...Give us a chance ;)

  6. You definitely belong in Sydney

  7. Hi

Coming from NYC then Sydney is probably the choice for you.

Brissy is a smaller Sydney but with a more relaxed feel to it, so that would suit you as well.

    Cya

    :)

  8. There are no decent beaches in Brisbane. Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast are great for beaches.

Sydney has great beaches. Also try Wollongong, Newcastle.

You should also consider the fees charged by various universities.

  9. definitely Brisbane, i live in Australia and i dread visiting Sydney, its alot like New York so im told, Sydney is a big city, good beaches and resturants aswell as partys and cheap beer. Brisbane is a big city to, but its a short drive from the Sunshine Coast which is always sunny, and not as crowded. Theres alot more to see up there than in Sydney. But goodluck with your choice.

  10. Sydney.

theres a few universities and educational facilities there.

and its got an awesome night life, sydney harbour and darling harbour at night are both awesome. there are some great beaches.

and pretty much the housing is seperated by two things : The North Shore and the South Shore.

the north shore is very posh, because its all new etc, with housing in  the millions mainly the beachside housing and apartments.

anything near the water will be real expensive.

the south-shore isnt as posh, still nice but as u get into the outer suburbs, its a bit rough lol.

good luck on ur move! :)

and sydney is a much more beautiful city than brisbane in my opinion.

  11. I've lived in NSW all my life both country and metro areas. I've only visited Brisbane a few times. I am also studying at uni myself. I've been looking around at unis in other states as well, and the only other cities that appealed to me were, Hobart (TAS), Adelaide (SA) and Perth (WA).

Out of Brisbane and Sydney: There is more variety in terms of the types of universities in Sydney. However the closer you are to the city the more expensive it will be. Brisbane has a smaller metro area which can have it's pros and cons. One example is the public transport in Brisbane, It doesn't take you as far in Brisbane for the same price, but trains are more frequent than in Sydney. You can get a train from Central to Newcastle or Wollongong (you might want to take a book with you) for the same price as an Airlink ticket in Brisbane. We get alot of International students in Sydney for various reasons, it really depends what your preferences are and what you are willing to pay.

This probably sounded like a whole load of rubbish.
