Don't care about calling the states, just interested in reaching new friends and my host family, so I need a local cell phone plan

  1. Germany is great because you don't pay for incoming calls, only outgoing ones on cell phones. So, my advice (as someone who lived there for 6 months) - take a walk down a major shopping street and go into many different cell phone stores. Ask around and shop for the best deal. I would recommend t-punkt (which is basically like t-mobile) or vodafone. These are good ones. Also, Germany uses SIM card based phones, so you may also be able to get an old phone from your host family or someone in Germany that you could just insert a new sim card into. This saves you a lot of money. Remember though, you are not staying long, so prepaid or preloaded cards are best because other plans require long term contracts.
