  1. I am also from the UK and applying to university in the US.

    Go on

    www.princetonreview.com

    www.collegeboard.com

    www.petersons.com

These 3 sites have info about every US college, financial aid, what you need to get in etc...

If you already know what uni/uni's you want to go to just go on its website.

Most of the US college sites i have looked at, i have gone onto their admissions page, then to international admissions and it says has an online application.

The UK eqivalant of a high school diploma is about 5 GCSE's and 2/3 A-Levels. You also need to take the SAT test and the ACT test. You can find out the nearest place you can take these tests at collegeboard.com and register to take them.

  2. First of all you need to research which colleges/universities offer the right course for you and at a price you can afford.

Once you have narrowed down your selection or made a decision you need to apply to them - this is relitivley simple, just visit said universities website and look for the international student section and there you will find all of what is required to apply for admission as an international student including application forms, grades/scores, financial requirements and other documentation which you will need.

Once you have been accpeted you will be issued with what is known as Form I-20 and with this you then need to pay the SEVIS fee ($100) and then schedule an interview at the U.S. Embassy in London for your F1 (student) visa.

Regarding funding, the majority of international studens are in fact self-sufficiant, relying on funds from the parents, family and the money which they have saved themselves. Scholarships and grants are limited and pretty much impossible for international studets to get when they are obtaining their first degree (Bachelors) in the United States. Scholarships are usually reserved for the "best and brightest" students who excell in a specific area of study.

That is why  I said the majority of international students are self-sufficient. Studying in the United States ranges between $18,000 and $45,000 per year!
