Question:

Studying in the USA?

I want to study for my degree at a University in America as opposed to here in the UK...I'm prepared to try & get a student visa, but I don't know the whole process of how to do everything.

Do I apply for a student visa first, or apply to the American university first? What are the steps in doing all this? How long will it roughly take, an estimate would be great so I know when to start arranging everything.

Thanks

  1. For me, which I'm doing the opposite, I have to have an acceptance letter from the university before I can apply for my visa.  Try checking out this website for information, even if you are not going through the company.  There is a lot of great information there.  good luck

  2. If you're studying towards an academic qualification in the 'States, you'll need an F1 Visa.  The application process is outlined quite explicitly on the US embassy website.

The visa application process is quite lengthy.

First, you need to get a sponsorship letter from the institution you wish to study at.  This will confirm that you are accepted on the course and have paid (at least part of) your fees.

The process continues with sending in the embassy forms with your sponsorship letter, getting back some confirmation, applying for an embassy interview, going along to the interview with proof of sufficient funds to cover your study and living expenses.

all along the way you'll be paying fees to various agencies.

In total it takes about a month, but it's best to allow 2 or 3 before you head out.

    Good luck.

  5. Studying in the United States is a very simple process!

You will first need to apply to and be accepted by a U.S. universitiy before you can apply for your visa. Applying for admission to a university in the U.S. is straight forward, simply go to the school's website and look for the admission requirements and process to apply for an international student. Here you will find all of the information you need including application forms, the documents you will require and any tests you may need to take such as the SAT I and SAT II: Subject Tests.

Once you have applied and been accepted the school will issue you with an I-20 and which this you then must pay the $100 SEVIS fee (this is paid online) and then you schedule your F1 (student) visa interview at the American Embassy in London.

The time frame, is unpredicable but you are advised to start the whole process about 12 months before you intend to commence your studies. Obtaining an I-20 from the school can take upto 5 or 6 months an then the visa process is no guarentee. Plan well in advance of your start date.

Below are a few websites to get you started.

  6. well, you have to apply to the university first, usually in community college and then recieve I 20, after that you get an interview for visa and that's it
