Question:

Stupid Physics question about sound and space.?

Ok this is totally dumb, but a friend and I are having a debate regarding space and soundwaves. Scenario: A huge asteroid is heading towards earth and a person grows to 10 miles in height / size. He then proceeds to stick his giant head past the stratosphere and shrieks like a wild pig at 100,000 decibals directly at the incoming asteroid. Would this be able to destroy the asteroid? I know some soundwaves do travel in space but do not know the mechanics of it. I assume the giant human would have to grab a big breath prior to sticking his head into space and squeeling?

  1. he'd probly die trying to get a deep enough breath to scream, cuz there is no atmosphere to breathe in space.

so no, he would die and we would have a giant and an asteroid heading for earth in a  very scary scenario

  2. Sound waves do NOT travel in a vacuum, but your giant is exhaling air, so the space beyond his mouth is no longer a vacuum.  In theory, an asteroid could be broken apart with acoustic energy, but it's exceedingly unlikely.  It would be really hard to impart that much energy acoustically, especially if you need to provide the air as well as the acoustic energy.

  3. Sound is a pressure wave, and there is not much matter in space, so I don't even know if the sound wave you make would even propagate.  But assuming there is a suitable medium for the sound to travel through, it could technically destroy an asteroid.  However, I do not know what decibel rating you would need to destroy an asteroid.

The pressure wave from a big bomb will have the same effect as your giant shriek.
