Question:

Stupid Q 4U, please answer: The electric plug is getting hot after 10 mins. of use> Time for new iron

The plug that goes into wall, & about 3 inches out from electric plug, was warm to touch. So, this means I need a new iron, as the electric cord is getting warm, right? Wrong?

Thank You, please be kind to me & my not-so-bright Q. I don't do electric cords.

Yours,

  1. It sounds like it is time for a new iron.

You might want to have an electrician check out the outlet to be sure that the insulation on the wires hasn't melted and the outlet is okay....not a good thing.

With that much heat being given off, I wonder why a circuit breaker hasn't tripped; the outlet might be on a circuit breaker that is rated too high of a load for that circuit.

  2. Without being there to test it properly (which would be ideal), plug in something like a hairdryer and run it on full for a minute or two.

Plug getting hot?.....It's the circuit needs looking at, not the iron.

Plug stays cool?.....It MAY be the iron, but that's not conclusive.

What happens if you plug the iron into any other socket?

These are just some basics things you can do to check to give you an idea where the problem lies.

Worth getting circuit checked anyway, as if the iron has been drawing too much current it may have affected the supply cables.

You could always unplug your 110V lady pleaser from the bedroom socket too. That might help ;o)
