Question:

Stupid SAT's-What is the best way to prepare for the PSAT and then the SAT?

Ok, so I'm just wondering what is the best way to prepare. Like in your opinion, which SAT prep book is the best and which SAT prep classes are good as well. Right now, I am in incoming Sophomore and I plan on taking my PSAT for practice in preparation for the real one when I'm a junior. I feel like since this is the summer, it is the best time to study. Though, I have a few questions:

Is it too early to study?

What is the most time efficient way to study and prepare?

From other similar questions I read and the answers to them, I should go and take LOTS AND LOTS of practice tests, but, I kind of don't want to take them until I improve my vocabulary.

Or do you think I should just take a few practice tests right now regardless of how pathetic my vocab is?

What are some good ways to memorize vocab and improve on grammar/puncutation/critical reading in general?

In your opinion/personal experience, which prep books are the best?

  1. Try finding a list of the fifty or so most common vocab words on the ACT/SAT and memorize their definitions

Take advanced classes in your sophomore and junior years

Read on a regular basis: preferably classics. It's the best way to improve vocabulary

Take as many practice tests as possible

Don't focus solely on the test. Try to get involved with volunteering, a sport or club, or some type of leadership program. GPA and admission essays are hugely important so don't blow them off. Ask a teacher for help with the essay. Revise it multiple times

Memorize important formulas and numbers (i.e. the squares and square roots of the first 20 numbers, the quadratic formula, etc...)

If you score around a 200 on your PSAT in your junior year you'll probably be eligible for a national merit scholarship, although you'll probably need closer to a 220 to become anything more than a semifinalist

Research any schools you're interested in

Books and CDs will probably be available in your school library. Ask about school preparatory programs. If you Google  SAT or ACT, you'll find plenty of useful sites

    Good luck

  2. I used the Barron's book and the official book from CollegeBoard.First, take a pracctise test to gauge where you stand. Then study the review chapters from the Barron's book and do the review questions. Then, take some tests from the Barron's book and ALL from the collegeboard official book.If you get this done,do the remaining tests from Barron's book.

  3. Take lots and lots of practice tests. Its really the only way to prepare for it and improve your scores by a good number.
