I think a person can be book smart, meaing good at school and acedemics, but lack common sense.  I have a friend who is smart but very gullable and lacks common sense.

Yes, of course. A person can be smart when it comes to thinking and making important decisions that could change everything & be stupid when it comes to their educational subjects. Or vice versa, I'm sure you understand.
