Question:

Stupid choice of bringing dog on plane. What to do?

I never traveled with my dog before but decided to bring her with me to California. Bad idea! She threw up/had diahrea and peed everywhere. She has anxiety issues and I gave her some pills the doctor gave me to calm her. She barked the whole time in a pressurized/temperature controlled cargo area. I don't want to go through the same issue again. Is there any possible choices (besides going by car) to make her comfortable and to prevent the same problems? I gave her a whole anxiety pill 4 hours prior to the flight and 2 hrs prior the flight. Thanks. PS: she is too big and yappy to go in the cabin with me. She barks the whole time.

  1. I would highly advise to not put your dog through the same trauma of flying. I mean it's not like she's in the most desirable place on the plane and the fact that she might have to sit in her own waste for hours seems cruel enough. I advise that if you must take her, do her the service of driving her to California. I have driven from Cleveland to San Diego and we made in 48 hours by driving with about three breaks. Seriously, your furry baby will thank you!

  2. I'm surprised your dog isn't dead.

If you try to travel by air with her again, I fear she will die.

That sounds like a near death experience already.

Have you never read the airline stats on deaths of pets traveling in cargo?

    I have.

Call someone to come get her in a car, or on your return trip, go by car. Don't drug her again.  It makes matters worse and does nothing for their anxiety.

And, use common sense and a leash when you stop for breaks.
