Question:

Stupid confusing traffic laws. Merging on highway.?

Where I live there are A LOT of highway merges with no yield signs. As a matter of fact 90% of the highways in my area don't have yield signs. I know that the traffic already on the highway has the right of way. There's no law that says you have to move over to allow vehicles to get on the highway. It's also dangerous to stop and wait. You have to keep moving. What do you do if there's a lot of traffic coming and nobody is moving over. Shouldn't there be yield signs at all these highway merges. It only makes sense to me. Sometimes I feel that a lot of these road ways were designed by morons. Today's highways are way too dangerous, IMO.

  1. If you have a complaint, bring it up with the municipality that is resposible for that particular roadway (e.g.-city, county, state, country, etc...). They are the one that make up the rules. You have to understand that the roads are set up in a balanc between safety and budget costs. The road itself is not dangerous, it's the morons behind the wheels of the cars that are on that road! If you have bad drivers in your area, expect to get in an accident sooner or later or just move. Here's some good advice: save some gas, ride a bike or a bus!

  2. If there is that much traffic, just inch your way in, someone has to let you in.

  3. Report to the poloice bringing the poblems involved

  4. At least here in Calif, the people on the freeway have the right of way. They should not have to slow down to let some one on  doing 25 or 30 MPH. What I do is as soon as I'm the ramp I floor it to get up to speed, I'm doing at leas 60 or 65 so much easier to merge onto the freeway doing that speed rather then doing 25 or 30. Why would someone do 25 or 30 and expect people doing 65 to let them on.

You do NOT have a good understanding of YIELD sign.  Yield sign is used when 2 traffic are approaching and the right of way is NOT clear.  So the DOT is saying to one side "YOU do NOT have right of way, so YIELD".

So telling the cars already on the hwy (in traffic) to yield means that the cars going ON TO the hwy has the right of way can just get on without even slowing down.

So maybe they should come up with a new sign saying "MERGE".  But I don't know how much people would help.  Maybe it just complicate an already over crowded sign posts.

So yes, cars are not giving you a chance to get on, but telling them to yield is not the answer.

    Good luck...
