  1. yes but you must present WITH the ohip card and it must not be expired.  If you present without the card in hand a doctor can charge your for the visit and bill out any related costs to your home...then it is up to you to sort it out with OHIP.  Do the doctors always charge...no..but they CAN if you do not have card in hand.


  2. Doctors are never "free"  They do get paid.  ;)

    If you have an OHIP card which is valid, then as long as the service the doctor is providing for you is covered under OHIP-then you do not have to pay.  If it is a service that is NOT covered under OHIP, then you have to pay the fees associated with that; including doctor's fees.

    You also should have your OHIP card with you.  A doctor can bill you until you prove to them you have coverage to cover the service they did.  Sometimes they get you to fill out a "health number release" form which allows the Ministry of Health to release your health number and current version code to the doctor so they get paid.  Other times, they let you call back if you dont actually have it with you.
