Other respondents are correct in defining "apocalypse" as "end of the world" only if you are looking for a colloquial definition.

Technically "apocalypse" refers to the unveiling of God's Will.  It derives from the Greek phrase "apokalupsis eschaton," and though Judeo-Christian tradition interprets this phrase as "end of the world," the last word actually translates to "age," "eon," or "era."

Thus, any divinely inspired vision that marks the end of one era or the beginning of the next would be an apocalyptic dream.  The world need not end at all.

But people pay less attention if they think the sun will still come up tomorrow.  ;)

some believe it will end in 2011. Some believed it would happen in the year 2000. Truth be told. none of us know.
