My friend recently started stuttering. He has never had a problem with speech before. The day before the stuttering occurred he got horrible news about a loved one. I'm wondering if something like that could cause stuttering just like seeing something horrible can cause temporary blindness. Further more how can i help him stop it ? I'm afraid that in the next couple weeks this bad news will only continue to occur and make his stuttering turn into a uncontrollable downward spiral.

  1. There are a few things you can do to help with stuttering.  The most extreme is speech therapy.  Breathing exercises, hypnposis, singing and voice lessons can also help.  It also depends on how bad your stuttering or stammering really is.

  2. Stuttering isn't always a permanent problem, it is estimated that less than 1 percent of adults stutter.

There are several factors that cause stuttering. Possible influences include incoordination of the speech muscles; rate of language development; and other forms of communication and life stress. Genetics play a major factor also. But it has never been scientifically proven that a trauma like this can cause stuttering.

It is best if your friend go see a speech-language pathologist, a professional who is specially skilled to test and treat individuals with voice, speech and language disorders. The diagnosis is usually based on the history of the disorder, such as when it was first noticed and under what circumstances, as well as a complete evaluation of speech and language abilities.

Stuttering isn't a disease, so it can't ever be 'stopped' or 'cured', but it can be helped.

Try going to the speech-language pathologist and they will provide help that suits you best such as electric devices you can use, therapies, and medication.

    Good luck :)
