  1. When you say "it's when I can't speak the word, then I stutter"... do you mean that you stutter when you don't know how to pronounce the word? If so, this is perfectly normal!

If when you say "I can't speak the word" you are describing your stutter, then keep reading.

A "block" is a type of stutter that may be what you are describing. This is when your mouth forms the word, but nothing comes out. You push and strain, and it finally comes out, often louder or more harshly than you had intended. This is a block, and this is a type of stuttering.

There are several approaches to learn how to reduce these blocks:

    1. Slow your speech rate

    2. Light contacts: This means to make your tongue and lips only lightly articulate as you speak, and ease into forming the word.

    3. False stutter: When you are expecting to stutter on an upcoming word, actually try to stutter on it. For example, if you know you will stutter on the word "student," then say the sentence like this: "He is a stu-stu-student." Practicing this often may actually increase your ability to pull out of a real stutter when it occurs.

    Good luck!
