Su-Wei Hsieh bounces over Irina-Camelia Begu to reach round two – Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012
Taiwanese challenger, Su-Wei Hsieh hit back to outclass the Romanian star, Irina-Camelia Begu, in a three-set thriller at the Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012 on Monday. She nudged up a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1 victory against the 21-year-old to charge into round
of 16 at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament held in Strasbourg, France.
The Taiwanese star lost the opening set in the tie-breaker but made a fitting reply and pulled out the victory with a breadstick. After earning this success in two hours and 12 minutes, Hsieh not only edged in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the Romanian
but also booked a spot in the second round.
The world number 58, Begu made a strong start at this clay court event and drew the first blood in the third game to leap to a 3-1 lead. She lost her edge in the sixth game but took the upper hand again in the very next game after capitalising on another
break chance. Despite losing her serve again in the 10th game, she enforced a tiebreaker and clinched the opener with a 7-6(5) score line.
Hsieh rebounded in the follow-up set and earned the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. She lost her edge in the very next game, the Taiwanese broke Begu’s serve again in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. Regardless of levelling
the scores in the sixth game, Hsieh unleashed her skills and stroke out the last three games and sealed the equaliser by winning six games to three.
Ranked 64th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Hsieh went on a five-game killing spree before the Romanian could hold on. The Taiwanese then held her serve once more and clicked the diced with a breadstick.
All in all, the 26-year-old jolted down a better first serve share of 73 per cent as compared to her rival’s 69 per cent and amazingly 46 out of 77 points on it.
Up next for Hsieh is the winner of the match between fourth seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues and the Georgian contestant, Anna Tatishvili.
