Su-Wei Hsieh grabs her maiden WTA Title in Malaysia – Tennis News
World number 78, Su-Wei Hsieh, won her maiden title in the BMW Malaysian Open on Sunday; her opponent from Croatia, Petra Martic, retired from the match in the third set due to fatigue issues. The match lasted an hour and 45 minutes
before the Croatian retired at the scores of 6-2, 5-7, 1-4.
The rain-stricken tournament forced the fifth seed participant to play two matches in a single day that diminished her stamina in the midst of the third set. It was the maiden contest between the two players; expectations were
with the fifth seed participant but her dehydration due to prolonged day led to her downfall.
Hsieh was handed over the trophy, courtesy to a couple of retirements in the tournament including this one. Earlier, the top seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, also retired from the tournament after catching an elbow injury on Friday.
Hsieh came all the way from the qualifiers and with a bit of luck bagged her first Women Association Title on Sunday.
She defeated the likes of Anne Keothavong and Casey Dellacqua in the second round and quarter-final respectively before being handed a semi-final berth after the retirement of the Dubai Duty Free Championships title holder, Radwanska.
She dumped the superior ranked Eleni Daniilidou of Greece to make her way into the final.
Martic was also consistent with her performances. She deserved a title more than her opponent, considering that she had faced tough competitors throughout the draw. She was up against Kurumi Nara in the second round before nailing
the third seed Chinese contestant, Shuai Peng, in the quarter-finals. The major triumph for the fifth seed came on Sunday when she ousted the second seed wildcard entrant, Jelena Jankovic, in the semis.
Hsieh was happy on her first title and stated, “Malaysia seems to be a lucky charm for me as I won here as a 14-year-old and also seem to have good results when I play in the Federation Cup. I got a bit lucky in the end as Radwanska
retired injured and Martic didn't finish. But, I too had a tough time coming to Malaysia, not getting enough rest from Dubai and playing in the qualifiers.”
She is still undecided about her conquest in the Indian Wells due to fatigue. She is looking for a greater prize, the Olympics gold medal. It is probably a wise decision to not play a lot of tennis before the start of London Olympics
later in June.
