Su-Wei Hsieh mashes Ayu-Fani Damayanti to progress into the main rounds – Malaysian Open 2012
Taiwanese top seed, Su-Wei Hsieh, plonked the 23-years-old Indonesian contestant, Ayu-Fani Damayanti, in straight sets 7-6(6), 6-0, to qualify for the main rounds of the BMW Malaysian Open. On Monday, the top seed participant
clinched her maiden head-to-head win in just over an hour.
Last year, both these players contested in the final of the Fergana tournament in July and Damayanti capsized the Taiwanese to take the title but she couldn’t repeat the heroics this time around. A considerable crowd was
witnessed at the hard courts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to watch the exciting qualifying competition.
The top seed contender commenced the proceedings in a stylish fashion; smashing a thumping ace across the court and registering a successful serve hold. She won the next four points in succession to further enhance the score
line to 2-0.
It looked like the Indonesian contestant was low on confidence but she fought back into the contest with a breakthrough in the third game and registered the first successful serve hold to level the scores at 2-2.
The scores kept ticking over before the Taiwanese broke her opponent’s serve in the sixth game and took 4-2 lead. The Indonesian didn’t lose heart and won a critical breakpoint in the ninth game to diminish the trail. She
levelled the scores at 5-5 with a comprehensive serve hold.
A tie-breaker round was enforced to decide the set. Unfortunately for the Indonesian, she slipped miserably during a rally and couldn’t recover to make a return; lost an early mini-break that proved pivotal in the end. She
lost the set but there was absolutely nothing at all between the two players to distinguish them on any grounds.
The second set was a bagel for the top seed who thrashed her opponent to all corners of the court. She revitalized her game plan and came out with a different strategy to dodge her rival. She started the proceedings with
a breakpoint and won two more in the following games to register a comprehensive triumph in the second half of the match.
World number 123, Hsieh has made it to the main round of the contest; will know her potential rival when draws are updated.
