Su-Wei Hsieh rallies past Ling Zhang into the main draw – WANLIMA Open 2011
World ranked 215th, Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei required three sets to overpower Ling Zhang of Hong Kong, world number 184, at the WANLIMA Guangzhou International Women’s Open 2011, an outdoor hard court event held
in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China from September 19th to September 25th. She registered a 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-1 victory over Zhang to advance into the first round on Monday.
25-year-old Taiwanese triumphed over the Chinese, four years younger than him, in two hours and ten minutes on their first face-to-face. She not only booked a main draw spot but also took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0
against Su-Wei.
Su-Wei confidently entered the hard court and held her serve in the opening game to take a 1-0 lead. She extended her lead by 3-1 after earning an early break of serve but to her dismay, the Taiwanese fell 4-3 down after losing
her serve twice. Su-Wei quickly counter attacked and snatched her break back. She then held remaining serves to take the set to a tie-breaker and fished out all the points to clinch the opener with a 7-6(0) score line.
The Chinese youngster broke Su-Wei’s opening serve in the second set but lost her edge in the proceeding game after gifting away her serve. She exchanged another break in the seventh and eighth game but broke again for the third
time in the last game to clinch the set with a 6-4 win.
Ling carried her momentum in the final set as she held her opening serve convincingly. However, she stepped off gas afterwards.
Taiwanese on the other hand went berserk as she bombarded powerful groundstrokes to wipe out next six games in a row and earned a breadstick.
Summing up the performance, Su-Wei produced a similar first serve share of 69 percent but registered an impressive 71 percent win on it. In addition to this, she saved two out of seven breakpoints faced though capitalised on seven
out of eleven breakpoint opportunities for a comfortable win.
