Suarez Eyes League Upgrade
Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has gotten all the attention anyone can want… Or not want. He played a spectacular World Cup for his country and he will surely be attracting the attention of clubs around Europe.
Suarez scored three goals for the Celeste in the World Cup. The duo of Suarez and Diego Forlan saw Uruguay through further than any other South American team. He also made perhaps the save of the tournament when his hand ball prevented a Ghanaian winning goal and helped Uruguay reach the last four.
Now Suarez has proved that he can play with some of the World’s best and he is hoping his club football career follows suit. The young striker currently plays for Ajax in the Dutch league and he is eyeing a move to the Premier League.
Teams like Manchester United and Tottenham have been searching all summer for transfer targets and Suarez may be next on their list.
In his time with Ajax, Suarez has scored 74 goals in 97 games. The 23 year-old feels it’s only a matter of time before he receives an offer from an English club: “I think that the people at Ajax all know that it will be very difficult for them to hold on to me.”
Suarez plans to show that he can play in a tougher league and show what he’s truly made of but the young striker is not in any hurry to search the market: “The first thing I want to do after the World Cup is go on a holiday. After that, we'll have to wait and see what will happen on the transfer market.”
Manchester United have already tried to lure Wesley Sneijder away from Inter Milan but it appears that will not happen. Tottenham is also looking around for new players to help them reach the next level. Suarez has made it clear what his intentions are: "I've played a good World Cup and is it a known fact that this results in interest from bigger clubs. You never know what happens."
Ajax boss Martin Jol has claimed that he has no intention of shopping Suarez. He believes that he can hold on to the young striker: “Few clubs can afford him.” claims Jol.
While Jol does not wish to sell the Uruguayan striker, you have to think that Suarez may be getting a little too good for the Dutch league. He has shown improvement in every season he has played and it may be time for him to pursue a new challenge. The long season and the physicality of the Premier League may be the challenge he is looking for.
Suarez believes that an offer from Manchester United may be too good to refuse: “If they call, you listen. I would only leave Ajax for a team in that category.”
Sir Alex Ferguson already has many options in front at the moment. The Red Devils are stacked with players like Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, Federico Macheda and Javier Hernandez who was also impressive in South Africa.
Ferguson has been known to target young players, and then mould them into superstars like he did with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The team certainly provides a great option for Suarez but the English club will first have to persuade Jol who does not intend to lose his star. It will perhaps take quite a lot of money to get the Ajax boss to change his mind. It’s hard to let go of a promising young player but at the same time, there comes a time where footballers need new challenges. Manchester United will have to make Jol an offer he can’t refuse.
