http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, by Aston Villa in a Premier League match on Saturday.
The Reds striker Luis Suarez struck late to save the home side some more disappointment, as the draw ended Liverpool’s run of three consecutive defeats in the league. However, the result kept the Merseyside team at the eighth place in the league table, after
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019 maintained their one point cushion over the Reds, by picking up a point against Norwich City.
Liverpool, who were already short of confidence before the start of the game, had an uphill task in front of them, given Villa’s early goal in the game. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-Herd-c9017 put the ball in the top left corner in the 10th minute, to open the scoring.
The goal did little to calm the nerves of the home fans, who had earlier celebrated the club’s Carling Cup triumph in February. Since then, there has been little for the Reds fans to cheer about, as Kenny Dalglish’s side is currently stuttering in their
league campaign. But a late header from the 20 million pound Suarez, ensured that Liverpool were not to be condemned to a seventh defeat in their last eight league games.
Liverpool looked the better of the two teams during the starting period of the match. The Reds almost went ahead after Stewart Downing’s low cross was met by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Shay-Given-c33284.
However, the visitors went ahead in the tenth minute, against the run of play. The Reds goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stephen-Warnock-c34158, with the resulting move from Villa finding Herd inside the box, who calmly dispatched the ball
into the back of the net.
Suarez then charged forward inside the Villa box, minutes after the goal, but saw his appeal for a penalty turned down by the referee. However, the replays suggested that Herd had clearly handled the ball, in his effort to clear the cross from the Uruguayan.
Despite the fact that the Reds enjoyed majority of the possession, they were unable to penetrate inside the Villa box. Suarez went down inside the penalty area on a couple of occasions and was booked in the 77th minute for a simulation.
Nevertheless, the prolific striker did leave his imprint on the game with eight minutes left on the clock, as he turned in a header from five yards out, after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Agger’s attempt was denied by the post.
The Reds skipper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196 then had the opportunity to make the headlines in stoppage time, but his long range effort was deflected by Given. Carroll failed to beat the Villa goalie via his head on the rebound, before the referee blew the final whistle,
to single the end of the game.
The draw was Liverpool’s tenth at Anfield this season.
