I am hooking up a surround sound system in my living room and am wondering where the sub should be placed in the room.

  1. It depends on the sub and you have to experiment, but typically subs are placed in the corner for maximum low frequency sound reinforcement.

  2. The best placement for 'most' sub-woofers is this. Find a spot that is one third the width of a wall, ( 10 feet from a corner in a 30 foot wide room) on the wall where you have the best access to run your cable to your receiver. Then place the sub-woofer about 1 foot from the wall. Watch a movie with some sub frequencies in it, like  Jurassic Park, or something. If you can't tell where the sub-woofer is by listening to it, it's placed well. If it doesn't sound right, try another wall. If you want the optimum placement, try this. Place the sub-woofer in the center of the room and hook it up to your receiver. Play some music with some serious bass in it. Now the fun part. Walk around the room, and listen from several different places. If you find a spot that where the sub sounds the best, that is the optimal spot for the sub-woofer. But almost no one wants the sub placed in the middle of the room somewhere. This theory is called "Acoustic Reciprocity".

Make sure that all of your equipment  is plugged into a real good surge protector.
