Subaru Pro TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival continues with round two on Friday: 2011 ASP World Tour
The third stop of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), the Subaru Pro TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival, continued to deliver the intense surfing action on Friday, April 29th at Plymouth’s Back Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand.
The second day of the surfing event featured two rounds instead of one. The event organisers took this decision with the intention of making up for the time lost due to the strong winds that had delayed the first round by one day. While Subaru Pro was scheduled
to start on Wednesday, it managed to get on the way on Thursday afternoon.
The second round kicked off in the morning with the second and three place finishers in the first round facing each other to remain in the title race.
The first heat of the day featured a battle between Australia’s Chelsea Hedges and her compatriot, Jesse Miley-Dyer. After an intense battle, Hedges managed to proceed to the third round with a two-wave score of 13.75 against Miley-Dyer’s 12.65.
In the second heat of the day, Australia’s Rebecca Woods faced Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich to remain in the competition and proceed to the next round. The contest remained relatively low scoring. However, Woods walked away with the win after finishing with a
total score of 10.50 against Mulanovich’s 7.25.
The third heat of the day pitted Brazil’s Silvana Lima against the New Zealand’s Sarah Mason. Lima got hold of two decent waves to earn a total score of 12.00. Mason only managed to get an unimpressive score of 8.10 to cede victory to her rival.
The fourth heat featured a showdown between the Australians, Tyler Wright and Claire Bevilacqua. Wright had an extremely shaky start to her event on Thursday and was determined to find her form and redeem herself. After a real close contest, she managed
to clinch the victory and secure her place in the next round. She scored 14.40 against Bevilacqua’s 13.25.
In the fifth heat of round two, Hawaii’s Coco Ho found herself facing her compatriot, Alana Blanchard. Both had failed to impress on the first day, though Blanchard was slightly more unimpressive than Ho. Friday morning did not turn out any better for Blanchard
as she surrendered victory to Ho after scoring 10.35 against her rivals’ 11.00.
The final heat of round two saw France’s Pauline Ado going head-to-head with Australia’s Laura Enever. Under huge pressure, the two surfers attempted to outperform each other. At the end, it was Ado who stood victorious with a final score of 14.75 against
her competitor’s 7.25.
While the second round turned out to be a real success for some of the surfers, it marked a premature end of this year’s Subaru’ Pro for others. However, those who had managed to prevail in the second round still had a long road ahead of them with various
challenges awaiting them. They, along with the winners of round one, will be battling each other in a triple-threat match to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
