Subban steer Montreal Canadiens by beating Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 to get play-off spot: NHL Update
P.K. Subban notched an over-time goal and Carey Price turned aside 42 shots to help the Montreal Canadiens beat the Chicago Blackhawks by 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Price got his 37th victory in the 71st game of his career. The left-winger, Michael Cammalleri, lit the lamp in regulation for Montreal, which clinched its fourth consecutive play-off trip and confirmed the spot.
“It definitely felt like a play-off game,” Price said. “Both teams were battling to get points and it came down to the end. That’s exactly the type of game we were expecting.”
With this victory, The Canadiens have 93 points and are in sixth-place in the Eastern Conference. Montreal sits one point behind the fifth-placed Buffalo Sabres.
Patrick Kane scored the lone goal for Chicago, which has dropped two consecutive games in the games which they have played this season. The goal-tender, Corey Crawford, surrendered all two goals on 34 shots in the defeat.
"You come to expect it from him. He's been awesome all year and he's really playing at the top of his game,” Kane said of Crawford. “We’ve still got some work to do but if we play like that we should win the majority of the games."
This loss leaves the Blackhawks into a tie with the Anaheim Ducks for the seventh-place in the Western Conference with 93 points. Chicago sits two points ahead of the Dallas Stars and the Calgary Flames, who are in ninth-place.
After the scoreless first stanza, the Canadiens got the scoring started in the seventh minute of the second period. Andrei Kostitsyn made a feed from behind the net to Cammalleri, who unleashed a wrist-shot past Crawford for his 18th goal of
the season.
Chicago pulled even in the 11th minute of the second frame when Kane blasted a shot that beat Montreal’s net-minder for his 27th goal of the season.
Price saved 20 quality shots in the final period to keep the contest deadlocked. Crawford turned away nine shots in the third.
Less than a minute into the extra-session, Jonathan Toews took a slashing penalty and the Canadiens got the power-play opportunity they so coveted.
Subban scored the game-winner in the second minute of the extra-session to seal the victory. Andrei Kostitsyn grabbed the puck along the right boards near the circle and centred a pass to Subban, who one-timed it past Crawford.
