Question:

Submitting writing pieces to magazines/publications?

Hello. I recently got into writing and produced some work that I think could be published in magazines or by some publisher. Is it better to go ahead and submit to the smaller publications or should I just submit to the larger ones? Not to brag but I think some of my work could be great if re-written and worked on some more. I'm also curious because the school where I'm taking writing classes has its own publication and if I submit there and it gets accepted, doesn't it ruin my chances of submitting that same piece of work to other larger publishers, since most of them only accept unpublished work? All advice and comments are greatly appreciated, thanks. I might be missing something here so feel free to fill me in:)

  1. You need to get a contact with the big people. it doesn't matter how good your work is when EGO is involved. trust me!!!! And your stuff should be great when turned in for submission and it shouldn't NEED reworking or anything. it's gotta be great. Why don't you submit some stuff so that you get paid! at the smaller places so that when you decide to get with the big places they won't try to get your stuff for free or make you do an internship or something. You can also see how contracts and negotiations work and you can sorta practice in the little pond until you get to the big pond.

Or just submit it to the big places!!! It's worth a shot and you never know....

    good luck!!
