I have a 1992 Nissan pulsar SSS N14, (hatchback) i have 2x 6.5 alpine type S speakers in front, 2x 6x9 alpine type S in rear a sony xplod amp running a 12" pioneer Sub in a sealed pioneer box. and an eclipse deck. what would be a better upgrade? keep the pioneer sub and sealed box and have it running from the sony amp still and 2 10" alpine type Rs either side in seperate boxs running from a 1000W monoblock alpine amp? or sell the pioneer and buy 2 12" type Rs and have them in a dual box? also what is better, ported or sealed for the type Rs?

  1. Here are some pointers to help you make the right decision:

    1. Having different subs running different amps doesn't sound very good - I wouldn't go with a 10" on a sony amp and 2 12"s on a alpine amp.  Also, I wouldn't run 2 subs off a mono anyway because mono's are built for 1 channel i.e. a sub hence "mono".  You can run it but you have to split channels and that reduces SQ (Sound Quality) dramatically.

    2. I hear that Type R's are great subs and a good 2 channel amp running bout 300-500w RMS each channel would bang nicely. Although I don't know which enclosure works best on Type R's. I reckon do a search of Type R's in enclosures and see which type - ported or sealed - is used more.  I would guess that is the preferred enclosure.

    3. In general, ported is louder and more 'bassy', while sealed is punchier.  Also, the smaller the sub the less distance the 'cone' has to travel hence the quicker the response rate.  Therefore, the best SQ would be from a small sub (say 10") that is sealed. I think that if you are a complete bass junky then 2 Type Rs (with a good amp!) in either type of enclosure will sound great.  To blow the roof off - go ported, if you want your bass to drop when the beat is meant to drop (like me) - go sealed.

    Hope that helps!

  2. id just get the 2 12" type r's and put them in a ported box

  3. forgett the subs and amps and buy a new car!
