Subs bump then stop then bump wtf?

ok i had 2 xtant subs hooked up and for months they worked fine off my 250watt amp then all of a sudden they will bump then stop then try to bump then stop then go back on i thought it was the amp it wasnt i thought it was the subs nope then maybe the wires nope i hooked a brand new sub to my boys car and it did the same to him what is going on please help

Amp going into safe mode, do you have the subs bridged? If so it could be that your amp is overworking itself, if your amp is stable down to 4 ohms and you are trying to push it at 2ohms then it'll over heat. If you hooked it up to the second amp the same way you will get the same results.  If this is the case unbridge them. Generaly when I ran into this problem that was the case, if it is not sorry I couldn't be of and help.
